Annual Appeal 2024
Dear Friends,
Housing is more than just a place to sleep - it is security, comfort, and warmth. Housing is the foundation of our social and emotional lives, and should be a sanctuary, a place to live in dignity.
For an increasing number of families in our community, housing is a question mark hanging over them each and every day: Where will I sleep tonight, and will my children feel safe, comfortable, and warm? Historical and ongoing systemic racism has created significant inequities in access to housing, affecting these families in profound and lasting ways.
At Family Promise of Greater Rochester, we hear firsthand the desperate situations of families who are forced to double up with others, sleep in cars, or resort to unsafe and unsuitable living conditions. With warmth, compassion, and a commitment to change, we work tirelessly to break down these barriers and create opportunities for families to find stability in a place they can truly call home.
We are Making a Difference
Since opening our doors in 2004, Family Promise of Greater Rochester (FPGROC) has supported 1,951 families with shelter, prevention and diversion services, and transitional housing — providing individualized support and trauma-informed care across programs to ensure a chance at a new beginning. A transitional housing program, added in 2023 as a natural next step to address the housing crisis, is currently assisting 3 families and will be expanding even further with the recent purchase of two additional buildings to be used for more housing!
With upcoming renovations at Webster Avenue and Portland Avenue, we’re creating additional spaces for families to build a stable, hopeful future in housing that’s truly decent and secure. Our families pay just $750 - $800 monthly for a three-bedroomtransitional apartment, far below HUD’s fair market rate for Rochester of $1,580. This ensures equitable, dignified housing as they take the next step on their journey.
One parent recently shared, “They offer safety immediately, and I knew they were going to help me.” Another expressed, “If I need anything at all, if I need to just talk or if I need something they will help me with it.” It’s stories like this that show Family Promise is a unique place of compassion and dignity, a foundation for rebuilding.
You Can Effect Change in 2025
