Education & Advocacy

Education & Advocacy

We know that affordable, decent, equitable housing will be seen as a human right and every family will have a place to call home only with systemic-level change.

Education

Education about and for families experiencing homelessness includes learning about redlining and housing discrimination, school segregation and education inequity, eviction, poverty and wealth gaps, and more.

  • Learn more about our Housing is a Human Right Presentation and Discussion Guide

  • Read a book or organize a book study in your neighborhood or faith community.

  • Invite FPGROC to lead a workshop or information session.

  • Explore our racial equity page.

  • Check out resources in our own Rochester community like ACT Rochester, Urban League, 540WMain, and …

  • Join an online affinity group like My Work To Do, which helps white people, and their People of Color allies, build stamina for discussing whiteness and race in everyday life.

Advocacy

FPGROC advocates for families every day by listening to families and providing case management and connections to other service providers in the community. Community-based advocacy can include:

  • Acting as an upstander rather than a bystander when witnessing bullying, microaggressions, or negatively biased behavior.

  • Learning more about, following, or joining local or regional advocacy groups related to housing justice or other social justice issues of personal interest.

  • Listening to the lived experiences of people who are different from us; learning to use our voices to lift up rather than speak for.
